Chaucer's masterpiece The Canterbury Tales is regarded as a monument that opened the realistic English literature in the Middle Ages and highly acclaimed for its realism. Yet due to the popularity, dominance and self-evidence of realism Chaucer' s intertextuality and stereotyped realism have been slurred or interred with prejudice and taken for granted for a long period, therefore the textual study and the investigation of its significance and values have been correspondingly slighted. This paper tries to probe the realistic traits of The Canterbury Tales for a better understanding of this poetic masterpiece and the realism in the Middle Ages is to be expected.
