The basic principle of ion mobility spectrometry is introduced and the design of a prototype microprocessor-controlled ion mobility spectrometer is described, including the overall construction, the signal acquisition method and the main program flow chart. The negative ion spectrum of dichlormethyl ether obtained by this prototype instrument is presented. The ion mobility spectrometer is highly sensitive and can be used for environmental monitoring and chemical reconnaissance.
