Taking advantage of dissertations on "underwater butterfly kick" in China and from abroad, this article summerizes and analyzes relevant data from biomechanical perspective, and concludes: The "underwater butterfly kick" has the relative merits, compared to emersed kick, of having smaller angle of attack and wave resistance. The characteristic of the technique is its small amplitude and low frequency, requiring athletes to possess flexible ankle joints, and powerful waist, abdomen, and leg strength. The paper also discusses how to develop these qualities and master the principle and methods of this underwater skill.
