As an Afro - American writer, Toni Morrison deeply roots her work in the black culture, and her works contribute much to retaining and developing the black oral tradition, which can be seen in her first novel the Bluest Eye. With the black in mind, she always tells stories rich in African - American folklore. Her prose is inflected with black musical traditions such as the spirituals, jazz and the blues. She uses the modernist techniques such as multiple perspectives, deliberate fragmentation and stream of consciousness to explore the destiny and options of the black in culture conflict.
