The earliest oil drilling in the US dates back to the 1850＇s using equipment that appears very basic to today＇s globally sophisticated industry. One of North America＇s earliest successful wells was the Dingman discovery well in Alberta, Canada, in 1913, which identified gas. Though the gas was somewhat sulphurous it was pure enough to fuel automobiles at the discovery site.
