The devastating Wenchuan earthquake has linked Jinan-the capital of Shandong in China＇s east coastal region with Leigu-a small town in southwest China.
On May 22, 2008, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China issued an urgent notice, which required that the 21 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities should each provide counterpart assistance to an earthquake-stricken area in Siehuan province. Jinan will provide counterpart assistance to Leigu Town, Beichuan County. According to the assistance plan, Jinan will provide 7,000 portable housing units for Leigu Town and install 6500 units. Jinan has also initiated the overall requirement that auxiliary living facilities should be installed with the construction of the portable houses.
