In last installment, our speakers discussed the role of tire opera orchestra.How about the role of the opera conductor,who leads not only the orchestra but also the singers on stage?The op- era conductor is like a majordomo: even before rehearsals,the conduc- tor has to communicate with the director regarding tire direction and content of the production. During rehearsals,the conductor coaches all of the performers so that optimal musical results are attained.At a performance,the conductor is like a spiritual leader for the entire group,reacting to what happens on stage moment by moment.It's just as Ivan Fischer once said:a good conductor has to have qualities of a diplomat.
