在五线谱中，用垂直的线或者说“小节线”来划分相等数目的节拍。我们可以从乐谱开头的数字看出一个小节有多少拍。乐谱开头较小的那个数字表示用的是什么样的拍子：二分音符，全音符的一半，用数字2来表示；四分音符，全音符的四分之一，用数字4来表示；八分音符用数字8来表示。较大的那个数字表示了一个小节中的节拍数：所以，3／4拍就表示每小节有三个四分音符，

Vertical lines or ＂bar lines＂ were used to divide off and equal number of beats into bars. The figures at the beginning of a piece of music show how many beats there are in a bar （or ＂measure＂ in America）. The lower figure shows what kind of beat is used; the minim, being half a semibreve, is indicated by the figure 2, the crotchet, being quarter of a semibreve, is shown by ＋, the quaver by 8.
