“髢(鬄)”“髲(被)”辨微

Micro-distinction of "Ti" and "Pi"

古代典籍中"鬄"、"髲"二字经常成对出现,俗皆以为是同物异称词,为古代假发的通称。但从古人的发式习俗和语源上来看,此实是受传统训诂浑言之训而致误的典型一例。"髢"指一切用于装衬的假发,重在原料;"髲"则指用于盘高髻的假发,或直接著之于头无需再加梳理的假髻,更重式样。

The Chinese characters ＂Ti＂ and ＂Pi＂ always appear in pairs frequently in ancient books, so people think it is the same thing in different forms. Because the two characters both refer to the wig a kind of head dress. But according to the ancient~ hair style custom and the language source, the author points out that the two characters actually have different meanings. The word ＂Ti＂ refers to the raw materials of wig, but the word ＂Pi＂ only refers to the hair in a coil in shapes.
