The syntheses methods of butanetetracarboxylic （BTCA） were reviewed, involving chemical synt- hesis, radiolysis and electro synthesis. The development of BTCA finish was introduced, such as nonphosphorus catalyst, the function of triethanolamine additive and softener during the finish. The application of BTCA on textile finish was reviewed, including application on cotton fabric, silk and linen, and durable press, antimicrobial and comfortable functional finish were involved in. At the same time, it was pointed out that high added-value multifunctional finish would be the developing trend in the future.
