This paper discusses the hardness definition of water-borne wood coatings; factors influencing film hardness, relation between the hardness and scratch and abrasion resistance and common test methods of hardness, emphasizing different test methods can get different test results. It gives the advice that demand for the hardness of water-borne wood coatings should depends on practical use of coatings, no needing to pursuit too high hardness.
