Hypertension is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death and mortality in the world.Despite intensive research ,the causes of hypertension remain poorly understood. However, its familial clustering and the high rate of concordance in monozygotic twins implicate that genetic faotors contribute to the pathogenesis of hypertension. So far, genetic studies in hypertension have largely focused on candidate genes strategy. Many plausible candidate genes which contribute to the physiological regulation of blood pressure have been reported, such as genes of reninangiotensin system, insulin receptor genes, genes responsible for lipoprotein metabolism, adrenergic receptor genes, oncogenes etc.Linkage analysis, allelesharing methods and association studies are three methods available for genetic dissection of hypertension.Genomewide screen study is a potential means for identifying new trait loci of hypertension. Moreover, given the high heterogeneity of this trait, identification of informative intermediate phenotypes would increase the chances of identification of hypetensionrelated genes. It is clear that advances will be more rapid with the collaboration of genetics and other subjects.
