Two Important Differentiations on the "People-Oriented" Notion

科学发展观的以人为本思想继承了我国古代民本思想的精华,但同时又与这种实质上是为了维护封建统治的民本思想有着本质上的不同;同样,以人为本思想也是对西方人本主义思想的借鉴和批判吸收。我们要想完整准确地把握和实践以人为本科学思想,就必须在正确理解以人为本思想科学涵义的基础上对以人为本思想与我国古代的民本主义以及西方的人本主义做出严格的区别。

The ＂people-oriented＂ notion of the Scientific Outlook on Development inherits the essence of the traditional ＂people-first＂ thinking of ancient China on the one hand while on the other it has fundamental differences from the ancient Chinese ＂people-first＂ thinking whose purpose, in essence, was to uphold the rule of feudal power. Meanwhile, the ＂people-oriented＂ notion draws on references from and critically takes in the hu manistic thinking of the west. Therefore, in order to fully and accurately comprehend and implement the thought of people-oriented approach, we must draw a strict distinction between the ＂people-oriented＂ notion and the ＂people-first＂ thinking of ancient China as well as the humanistic thinking of the west on the basis of correctly understanding the scientific meaning of the ＂people-oriented＂ notion.
