Annie Proulx's second novel The Shipping News concerns the adventures of Quoyle, a thirty-six-year-old "third-rate newspaperman" from New York, whose life is a steady stream of failures and pains until he and his small family move to their ancestral home in Newfoundland. The paper aims to elaborate the function of language in constructing Quoyle's self in the light of Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor's theory. Taylor holds that human beings are above all language animals and our sense of self is inherently and fundamentally tied in with language. He also conceives the self as both moral and social being. Therefore the discussion is divided into two sections with each bringing to light how language with moral and dialogical nature determines Quoyle's self-identity.
