Soil microbe is the major part of the decomposers in the continent ecosystem. As well it takes part in several physiologic activities including the decomposition of organic matter, the conversion of nutrition, the stimulation or depression of plant growing, and also all kinds of physical processes in soil. Microorganisms are really important bioindicators of soil quality, and thus they can be used to monitor the changes of soil quality. Isothermal microcalorimetry is a convenient and rapid technique to determine microbial activity, and so it is extensively applied in the measurement of the thermal effect produced by soil microbial metabolism. This article is an overview about the development of isothermal microcalorimetry used in the researches of soil microbial activity. It can be divided into the following parts that are the introduction of the isothermal microcalorimetry, comparison between the isothermal microcalorimetry and conventional methods, study of the influence of many different environmental factors and soil conditions on microbial activity in soil system. And in this overview, the future tendency in soil microbial activity determination and other studies by isothermal microcalorimetry were also discussed.
