摘要
Brown & Levinson在Goffman研究的基础上提出的"面子理论",在修辞学、语用学和社会语言学等领域都具有深远影响。他们试图将面子理论作为一种普遍的语言现象加以研究。然而,这种理论并不是完全具有普遍性的。文章讨论了汉英文化中的面子和礼貌,并探讨其对跨文化交际和英语教学的启示。
Based on theories from Goffman （ 1967 ）, Brown ＆ Levinson （ 1978 ; 1987 ） put forward their face theory which made great influence in such fields as rhetoric, pragmatics and sociolinguistics and they tried to treat it as a universal linguistic phenomenon. Howev- er, the theory is not universal. This paper explores face and politeness in Chinese culture and English culture, and tries to provide some implications for cross - cultural communication and English teaching.
