Earthquake is a natural disaster as well as an opportunity for urban regeneration. Reconstruction, however, is not just a technical issue; it is a humanitarian concern. Through the experience of Taiwan's "9.21" Earthquake Memorial Park, the article rethinks the philosophical meaning of reconstruction, suggests a deeper understanding towards the community in distress, and cautions against the mentality of the "rescuers". The article also introduces the design scheme from the author, the concept of which comes from the visible and the invisible remains of the site: the ruined plateaus, the thick retaining wails, the hidden fault-line underneath, and the lushly grown trees. From those elements the scheme develops into a series of commemorative performance spaces and a meaningful urban space.
