Zhang Liwen holds that Fan Ruanyou's My Humble Review of the Anecdotes follows Zhu Xi's Variorum of the Anecdotes. Fan's purpose is to explain the true meaning of the Anecdotes and Confucius. It is because his explanation of the text by way of Zhu Xi's studies that My Humble Review of the Anecdotes follows the line of neo-Confucianism. It also shows the influence of Zhu Xi in Vietnam. Xiang Shiling believes that Li Yu's studies on the Book of Change is under the guidance of neo-Confucianism, but it has some difference from the Chinese neo-Confucianism on the emphasis of dao and mind. His work lays stress on innovation, instead of following the hitherto examples of annotating the classics.
