由20世纪初期美国的排华风潮看华人的近代意识

A view on the contemporary consciousness of Chinese from the perspective of anti-Chinese movement of America in the early 20th century

19世纪中期开始的美国排华运动发展到20世纪初,成为席卷全美的排华风潮。寓美华人的人身财产安全受到严重威胁和损失,激发了他们对入籍归化权利的争取;国内的人民听闻华侨在美遭遇之后,在民族资产阶级的带领下爆发了全国性的抵制美货运动。国人借助媒体,发动舆论,表现了逐渐增强的国家、民族、合群、文明等近代意识。由排华风潮引发的这一系列事件在中国人的近代化史上有着重要的地位。

Beginning from 1850s, the anti-Chinese movement in America has turned out to become a campaign all across the country till the beginning of the 20th century. The personal safety and the safety of property of Chinese living in America have suffered menace and loss, which inspired their desire of fighting for the right of naturalization. After being heard by the people back in China, it triggered the outbreak of the movement of boycotting American products led by the national bourgeoisie all across China. With the help of media and the public, the movement was getting influential and manifested the arousing of such contemporary senses as national identity, national unity, unity, and civilization, etc. a series of events caused by the movement played an important role in the history of Chinese modernization.
