From Sharing a Common Hatred to Parting Company——A Study of the Similarities and Differences between Li Hong-zhang and Shen Bao-zhen in Their Thinking on Modernization Thought Revealed through the Wu Song Railroad Case

李鸿章、沈葆桢均是晚清近代化运动中的杰出人物,二人的近代化思想在当时具有代表性。吴淞路案是李、沈二人共同经手的涉外事件。通过"吴淞路案",可以明显看出李、沈二人近代化思想之异同,进而认识到他们近代化思想中的进步与不足之处,以为今人之借鉴。

Li Hong-zhang and Shen Bao-zhen were two outstanding figures in the modernization movement during the late Qing period. Their modernization thought was representative at that time. An analysis of their handling of the Wu Song Railroad case reveals the similarities and differences in their modernization thought and enables us to understand their progressiveness and deficiencies which can serve as lessons for us to draw on.
