姚鼐其人其文的民主性和进步性表现在六个方面:宣扬做"亲民之吏",有甘为"活民而得罪"的献身精神;赞扬"尽去苛征,商民喜之",歌颂商人"明智绝人";鼓吹"惟贤者为尊,其于男女一也"的平等思想;赞赏"绝意仕宦",提倡"士自从所好"、"自行其志"的人格独立和个性自由;张扬"自适己意"、"自发其思"的作家创作论;主张"与时俱进"、"与年日新"、"与世转移",不断图变求新。认识其民主性和进步性具有重要的现实意义。
