Etymology and Meaning of "寧 (宁)"

"寧"在甲骨文与金文中虽有多种写法,但其意义都是表示"安宁"。小篆"寧"字形从"丂"而非"丁",从"寍"得声。"寧"由本义"安宁"引申又有动词"问安""奔丧",副词"寧可;岂,难道;竟,乃"及作为连词与助词的用法。

Despite many different ways of writing in Oracle -bone Inscriptions and Jinwen （characters of the Jin Dynasty）, ＂寧（宁）＂ always has the same meaning of ＂peace＂. In Xiaozhuan scripts, ＂寧（宁）＂ got its font from ＂丂＂ （kǎo）＂ but not ＂丁 （dīng）＂, and its sound from ＂寍 （níng）＂ .
