汉画像石的产生是多种因素的综合,它较早地出现在徐州地区,与这里的自然条件及西汉时期楚国的政治、经济和思想文化等密切相关。汉画像石墓出现在西汉早期,在产生之初并不统一。石椁墓逐渐成为画像石墓的主流与身份较低的人对中型墓葬的一些葬俗进行模仿有关。早期画像石的画像内容较为简单,基本是对现实的模仿,同时又表达出墓主的理想。
