先锋(avant-garde)一词在中文中同时也被翻译为"前卫",在19世纪早期作为一个军事术语和概念被第一次用在文化和艺术上。先锋艺术通常指挑战传统陈规的新艺术,特别指代20世纪前期的现代艺术流派。自第二次世界大战起,先锋已经通常被用来作为一种现代艺术运动的标签,而且被用来作为与"现代主义"具有相同意义的一个对应词。保罗·伍德通过梳理与分析艺术与政治上的先锋概念在历史中的关系与流变,阐述并界定了现代主义与先锋概念的本质属性、历史价值,及其现实意义。
The word of Avant-garde has been translated as pioneering in Chinese. In the early 19th century it firstly was used as a military term and the pioneering concept in culture and arts. Avant-garde usually refers to the new art challenging the traditional rules, especially referring to the modern arts styles of the early 20th century. Ever since the World War Ⅱ, it is usually used as a label of modern arts campaign as well as a counterpart for modernism. Paul Wood, through the investigation of the avant-garde concept in the arts and politics in the history and evolution, further explains and defines the nature, historical value of the modernism and avant-garde and its modern meaning.
