George Steiner's Translatology Traced Back to Walter Benjamin:An Interpretation of After Babel

This paper elaborates the influences of Walter Benjamin's essay'the Task of the Translator'upon George Steiner's masterpiece After Babel:Aspects of Language and Translation,on the basis of which G.Steiner constructs his own translation theory and translation criticism.The author points out that G.Steiner discovered and inherited W.Benjamin's ideas on translation earlier than other scholars like Paul de Man. They share at least the following ideas:élite requirements for literary translation, recognition of translation as'echo'and acknowledgement of literal or even linear translating.
