The pretreatment of polluted Yellow River source water was carried out using movingbed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and ceramsite biofiher (BF). The results show that MBBR and BF can effectively remove natural organic matters (NOM), algae, algae toxins and other pollutants in water. They can also reduce the formation potential of disinfection by-products. MBBR and BF have the same removal efficiency of CODM. and TOC, but for the different organic matters, the biodegradable organic matters with smaller molecular weights are easier to be removed. BF has higher removal efficiency of chloroform precursors than MBBR, and the same removal efficiency of total algae as MBBR. Both BF and MBBR show better removal capacity of microcystin, with the removal rates of 56% and 63% respectively. As biological pretreatment processes, MBBR and BF can strengthen the conventional process, ensuring drinking water safety.
