In order to implement these newer design techniques, more quantitative methods of risk and reliability assessment are required. Traditional process hazard analysis methods focus on hazard identification with a qualitative approach to risk assessment. A recently released international standard, IEC 61508, provides a new method of process hazard analysis and risk assessment.
