Why Buddhism Declined in India

关于佛教在印度衰落的原因,中印西方学者已提出种种意见。此外,佛教在印度从未成为一统天下的宗教,在与婆罗门教互争雄长的过程中从未获得过压倒性的优势,这是佛教最终在印度衰落的原因之一;佛教虽然是作为反婆罗门教的"异端"出现,但其主要教义却出自婆罗门教的思想,后在发展过程中为争夺信众又吸收了婆罗门教的许多东西,这更成为佛教在印度衰落的重要原因。

On the reasons of why Buddhism declined in India, scholars of China, India and western countries put forward many different opinions. Furthermore, Buddhism had never become a dominated religion in India. During the process of contesting with Brahmanism, Buddhism had never had an overwhelming advantage, which was one of the reasons of Buddhism＇ s declining in India; though aroused as the heresy opposing Brahmanism, Buddhism adopted many thoughts of Brahmanism to gain more followers during its development, which was the important reason of Buddhism＇ s declining in India.
