自汉代董仲舒"独尊儒术"的建议被采纳后,儒家思想长期统治中国。儒家主张"礼治",导致法制伦理化,伦理政治化。面对元、明时期法制和伦理道德的沦丧,《金瓶梅》的作者对此却无可奈何无力挽救,因而表达出了强烈的忧患意识,唱出了一曲法制与道德沦丧的挽歌。对法制与道德沦丧的忧患,正是这部小说的主题和文化意蕴所在。

Since the adoption of the suggestion made by Dong Zhongshu in the Han Dynasty that the Confucianism should he exclusively worshiped, China has been overruled by Confucianism over a long period of time. ＂The rule by rites＂ proposed by the Confucianists leads to the ethicalization of the legal system and the politicalization of the ethics. The author of ＂the Plum in the Golden Vase＂, a witness to the legal, ethical and moral decay during the Yuan and Ming Dynasty, feels so helpless and hopeless about it that he can do nothing but express the intense consciousness of distresses and worries and lament over it. It is his distresses and worries about the legal and moral decay that the theme of this novel connotes.
