On Chaocuo’s Idea of Currency Economy

晁错为何要"贱金玉"?因为金玉就是货币。他认为使用货币或不利于忠于皇权的教育;或不利于君民距离的缩小;或不利于以农为本的自然经济的巩固;或不利于守边官兵战斗力的提高;或不利于社会秩序的安定;或不如"粟米布帛"的实用价值高。"贱金玉"的直接目的是"以粟为赏罚","入粟县官(即朝廷),得以拜爵,得以除罪"。其危害非常严重,或开了历史的倒车;或扼杀了农民的生产积极性;或开了卖官买官的恶劣先例。

Why did ChaoCuo despise the gold and jade？ Because they were the currency. He believed that the use of currency was not conducive to the education of imperial power; or not conducive to narrowing the distance between emperor and the people;or not conducive to the consolidation of the natural agricultural - based economy;or not conducive to the officers and soldiers guarding the boarder with the improvement of combat effectiveness;or not conducive to social order stability;or lower than food and clothing in the practical value. The direct purpose of looking down on gold and jade was using food for reward and punishment, accessing to the imperial court, to getting official and to be dismissed from the crime. It was very harmful, or marking historical retrogression, or stifling the production enthusiasm of the farmers, or opening a bad precedent of selling and buying the official.
