张萱为晚明著名学人,其著述丰厚,于史贡献犹多,惜其著作散佚较多,《西园闻见录》是其现今唯一一部存世的史著。该书卷帙浩博,详载明代有关德行、政事、边疆问题等方面的众多资料,实为一部明代史料的汇编,史料价值很高,是研治明史的重要资料。

Zhang Xuan was a famous scholar of the late Ming Dynasty and wrote many works, especially history books. However, most of his works have not survived through the ups and downs of history and XiyuanRecord s is the only history book that has survived until now. This book is rich in content and has records of the moral standards, political and historic events, borderland issues and other valuable data of the Ming Dynasty.
