An urgent challenge facing business today is the need for technical and management approaches that will alleviate global environmental problems and support sustainable industrial growth.Industrial ecology is a new view of industrial infrastructures that is emerging in response to this challenge. It sees the patterns of the biological ecosystem as the model for solutions to environmental problems and for the future of "industrial ecosystems" that will be more compatible with the natural environment.This article disusses industrial ecology’s theoretical assumptions, its implications for future environmental policy, technological developments,and practical applications for industrial reform.
