Separation of metal ions with the microcapsules has some advantages over other methods, since the microcapsules can have desired properties, such as the size and its distribution, membrane thickness, and surface properties, by adjusting process variables and materials used. The extraction of uranyl ions from aqueous solutions has been studied using polyurea microcapsules. Experimental results showed that extraction rate increased with a decrease of the microcapsules diameter and pH in the feed solution containing uranyl ions, but increased with an increase of tributyl phosphate (TBP) concentration in the microcapsules. The salting out agent NaNO 3 was essential for the extracting process. When TBP and 8 hydroxyquinoline (HOx) were used as the co extractants encapsulated with the microcapsules, the extraction rate for uranyl ions was much faster than that of the microcapsules solely containing TBP.
