Objective:To evaluate the relationship between the levels of IL-18 and the balance of helper T cell in patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage. Method: Seventy-seven hypertensive patients were divided into two groups : group one consisting of 36 cases with cerebral hemorrhage (case group) and the control one consisting of 41 cases without cerebral hemorrhage. The levels of plasma IL-18, IFN-γ and IL-4 were measured using ELISA. Result: IL-18 and IFN-γ levels were found to be sharply increased in case group compared with the control group. The levels of IL-4 were no difference. The ratios of IFN-γ/IL-4 in case group were higher than those in controls. IL-18 were positively correlated with the levels of IFN-γ( r =0.58 ,P 〈0.01 )and no correlation was found between IL-18 and IL-4 ( r = 0.08, P 〉 0.05 ). Conclusion: High levels of IL-18 may associate with the imbalance of Th1/Th2subsets, which may involve in cerebral hemorrhage progression in hypertensive patients.
