Nantong Indigo-dyeing Calico-Simple and Natural Fabric for Apparels

青白相间,清新纯朴的蓝印花布是中国传统的手工印染品。过去在西南、中南、华东、华北、东北地区都有过出产,流行了大半个中国农村。但是由于近代工业的发展,机器织布和化学染料的发达,猛烈地冲击了传统的自给自足的小农经济,农村中以家庭手工业方式存在的土织、土染作坊几乎全面瓦解消失,唯独在江苏南通地区奇迹般地得到保存与发展,成为如今我国蓝印花布生产的唯一代表。

This thesis discusses the indigo-dyeing calico with regard to its history, the reason why it has been preserved and developed miraculously in Nantong, Jiangsu, and the boundless attraction of the fashioable garments made from the traditional indigo dyeing calico. Meanwhile, the thesis points out that greater attention should be paid to the production of such fabric in view of the present situation which is far from being optimistic.
