This paper attempts to define poetry from the perspectives of the nature,the functions and the features of poetry. The nature of poetry is to express emotions. Good poetry often observes the principle of being reasonable while expressing feelings. The two most fundamental functions of poetry is to cultivate emotions and elevate personalities. The two leading features of poetry are form and image. They serve as the most efficient perspectives while studying poetry. Poetry is thus defined by its nature,functions and features.
