The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) started hybrid rice research and development in 1993. The breeding program primarily uses cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) system to breed three-line hybrids, although prospects of deploying thermo-sensitive genic male sterility (TGMS) are also being explored to develop two-line hybrids. Some adaptive varieties/lines were identified as maintainer and good restorer using wild abortive cytosterility system. Yield trials conducted at main stations and other regional stations in 1995～1996 Boro season revealed that yield of hybrids from IRRI outyielded the best recommended Boro varieties BR28 and BR29. The results are encouraging and indicate the prospects of hybrid rice in Bangladesh. Future action plan have been undertaken to make hybrid rice research more effective.
