The A wakening was the masterpiece of Chopin, an American novelist and short story writer. In her novel,a lady in black is a central and powerful symbol that serves to add meaning to the text and to underline some subtle point Chopin is making. Mysterious, lonely and wordless, she shows up only several times without being given much description. This image is the symbol of the social constraints on women. It also suggests that the hope that the keroine longed to throw off the social conventions and life as she chose turn out to be unworkable.
