Wolf in the Wasteland was written in a degenerating era, in which the intellectual was almost unable to survive. The writer regarded the humour as the means of saving himself and helping people obtain faith and hope. The humorous view of the writer, ＂forced smile under the gallows＂ ,was setting up on the background of the degenerating era, yet it was not desperate and its essence is love and beliefs. Because of this, to read and explain Hesse has still significance in today＇s society.
