Forging an alliance enables a firm to focus resources on its core skills and competencies and acquire other components or capabilities it lacks from the market place. However when the alliance partners seeking knowledge and capabilities from external sources, they simultaneously face the risk of exposing their own vital internal knowledge. Therefore, how to control the risk associated with making knowledge available to the member enterprises, how to protect themselves against unwanted strategic knowledge loss become one of the most challenging things of management. The paper investigates issues concerning the existed theoretical and empirical research on knowledge leakage and related risk control in alliances and tries to highlights the assumptions, the theoretical foundations of each knowledge protection models.
