The information commons has developed into the learning commons and the collaborative learning model is springing up in universities around the world. This paper explores the necessity of establishing the learning commons to support the readers＇ collaborative learning in the university libraries. Contending that the learning commons is a new stage and an important branch in the development of the information commons, it also discusses the rules and related issueses about the physical environment, the virtual environment and the supportive environment for building a learning commons. Meanwhile, it shows that the establishment of a learning commons is a relatively complicated process in which a reasonable layout, comprehensive functions and a fascinating physical environment constitute the basis, while a community -based virtual collaborative environment occupies an important place, and an interdisciplinary and cross -departmental supportive environment plays a crucial role.
