Objective To investigate the diabetic patients' cognition, attitude, behavior and needs to ocular complications. Methods 58 diabetic patients with ocular complications and 51 diabetic patients without ocular complications were investigated using a self-designed questionnaire. Results 1/2 to 2/3 of the diabetic patients were lacking in the understanding to the risk of ocular complications. More than 80 percent diabetic patients thought that they should periodically receive an ophthalmologic examination, but less than 1/3 diabetic patients did it. Among the diabetic patients without ocular complications, 82.4 percent appeared one or several eye disease symptoms, and nearly 10 percent frequently appeared eye disease symptoms, but 52.4 percent had no any processing. Over 80 percent diabetic patients hoped for acquiring relevant knowledge of diabetic eye disease. Generally they obtained the knowledge from oculists, media, internists and other diabetic patients, but seldom from nurses. Conclusions Most diabetic patients are lacking in the understanding to the risk of ocular complications, and don' t develop a periodical ophthalmologic examination habit. In future, the function of the physicians and nurses should be strengthened in the publicity and the education of the diabetes ophthalmopathy.
