This essay reviews the origin and development of sonnet both in its form and content; introduces the characteristics and conventions of sonnet cycle or sonnet sequence ; and analyses the literary quality and ar- tistic achievement of three main Elizabethan Sonnet Cycles, namely, Philip Sidney＇ s Astrophel and Stella, Edmund Spenser＇ s Amoretti and Shakespeare＇ s Sonnets. Based on his experience of translating English poet- ry and on his understanding of the purpose of translation, the author points out emphatically that, since no po- etry can come into maturity unless it is based in some sort of metrical regularity, the Chinese sonnet translator should follow the rhyme schemes of the original and allow the rhythms of natural speech to play across the reg- ularity and rigidity of meter in their Chinese versions.
