Zora Neale Hurston is one of the earliest scholars pioneering in the studies of the tricksters in the United States. Therefore, the discovery and the interpretation of the trickster image in Their Eyes were Watching God may provide an important clue to a full appreciation of her artistic creation. As an anthropologist well acquainted with black folklore, Hurston makes an allusion and response to the racial and gender issue by depicting the mule in the novel as a trickster. The double-voicedness of the signifying trickster reveals the double oppression (both racial and sexual) upon the black American females in social life.
