Translation Is Different from Translation --A Probe into Differences in Definition of Translation

翻译定义的首要问题是给什么样的翻译下定义，若定义项不明确，极易将此“翻译”理解为彼“翻译”。此外，由于语言形式的误导，人们倾向干将所有“翻译是……”的命题视为翻译定义。

The proper definition of ＂translation＂ must be premised on the question of what kind of translation to define. If there is ambiguity in what is defined, one kind of translation is apt to be taken for another. Misled by linguistic %rms, people tend to deem any statement starting with ＂Translation is…＂ as a definition of ＂translation＂. Through analyses of various problems in defining ＂ translation＂, this paper presents some principles for defining ＂translation＂. Then it gives the author＇s own definition of ＂written translation＂.
