Control Technologies of Struvite Scaling in Wastewater Treatment Systems

Struvite scaling is a common problem in municipal wastewater treatment plants, especially in plants with enhanced biological nutrient removal processes. The scaling can cause significant operation and management problems if not anticipated. But struvite scaling can be completely controlled if properly addressed by using some effective measures. These measures include improving wastewater and sludge treatment processes, adjusting the pH value of wastewater and sludge, reducing the concentrations of magnesium, ammonium or phosphate ions, recovering the struvite precipitation occurring in controlling conditions, selecting the materials used in wastewater and sludge facilities and so on. Each measure has its advantages and disadvantages and can be used alone or combined with others.
