The Bluest Eye is about the miserable experience of a little black girl who longed for a pair of blue eyes. Beneath the surface of the story lies the conflict between American black culture and white culture, and the author' s awareness of cultural criticism. By analyzing the notion of beauty and ugliness, sexual relations and images of God from a cultural perspective, this paper reveals the cultural implication in the theme of this novel. It also points out that the author aims to warn American blacks of the consequences of discarding black culture, and tries to convince them of the importance of inheriting black culture in keeping confidence and self-respect.
