Just as has been the case in China, Viet Nam has in the past 50 years worked to combine traditional and modern medicine in their medical schools, medical research programmes as well as hospitals. They have also introduced a licensing system for about 20,000-35,000 active apprentice-trained traditional practitioners. This paper introduces three particular `western' understandings of how traditional medicine is different from modem medicine. In conclusion, there are severe limits to using Thomas Kuhn's concept of `incommensurability' when empirically accounting for the continuing persistence of both traditional and modern medicine in Viet Nam.
