By Seatrade estimates the Dalian region will produce more than 100 ships next year. That’s more than the combined output of every yard in Germany. First and foremost is Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co, the result of a 2005 merger between the original Dalian Shipyard Co and Dalian New Shipbiuilding Heavy Industry Co, both owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). A giant new dry dock measuring 550m by 80m will open next year, the yard’s fourth dry dock to go alongside three slipways and four piers. Zhang Tao, vice president of DSIC, points out that the new dry dock will allow DSIC to produce more than 50 ships a year, up from the current 30. With 126 ships on order DSIC is in the top ten yards globally.
