LCED, which considers the product value in the whole life-cycle at the initial design stage, provides a series of tools and means for evaluating the quality of product design and product value. Therefore, LCED has become one of the effective design method for developing products of high quality and low cost. In this paper, the main areas and status of LCED research have been introduced. while the necessity and the importance of LCED research in China have been disscussed.
